Psychologist sector highlights

Download this snapshot to view the results of 177 respondents who selected ‘psychologist’ as their profession from 1,518 health, social and community services workers who took the 2020-21 National Workforce Survey.

Overview

  • Psychologists reported higher capability in nearly all subscales when compared to the total survey population. The highest scores were reported for understanding childhood trauma and adversity, and for good knowledge, confidence and skills in child mental health capability and practice. Psychologists also reported higher scores for facilitating support and workplace support than the total population.
  • Survey results indicate psychologists could strengthen their support for children by increasing capabilities in infant mental health.
  • Like other professions, psychologists registered some challenges in facilitating support through collaborative services and referrals, especially with families in the perinatal period, or when working in adult mental health.
  • Psychologists who had used Emerging Minds resources demonstrated the material is well suited to this workforce.
