Anna and the Sea – A story to help children understand a parent’s mental illness

This picture book was produced in Canada, but is just as relevant to Australian audiences of 7 to 12 years of age.

The story focuses on Anna, who is unable to talk with anyone about her unhappiness that her mother is ill. However she comes across an unconventional friend (Gustav the crab) who helps her to better understand this difficult situation that so many children experience. It’s a touching narrative that aims to inform and support children around the compexities of mental illness.
