Resource Summary
This learning pathway acknowledges the challenges and complexities that you face in your everyday practice as a GP, along with the skills you are already using that can be applied to support children’s wellbeing. Developed together with GPs and families, the courses offer step-by-step guides for conducting infant and child mental health assessments, supporting families who have experienced a natural disaster, and holding preventative conversations with parents to buffer children from the impacts of adversity.
The following courses are accredited by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) for CPD Activity or Accredited Activity points.
Supporting children’s resilience in general practice
This course introduces the PERCS Conversation Guide, which is a short, semi-structured and evidence-informed psychosocial discussion tool developed from consultations with GPs and parents. It supports conversations between GPs and parent-patients around the impact of adult health issues, and other family adversities, on children’s daily lives. It is a preventative and proactive approach that encourages shared understanding and decision making with parents.
A GP framework for child mental health assessment (5-12 years)
This course is for general practitioners who wish to increase their skills in assessing, managing, and supporting children (5-12 years) with mental health difficulties, and supporting their families. You will learn how to complete a child mental health assessment and management plan using a specific GP framework.
A GP framework for infant and early childhood mental health assessment (0-5 years)
This course is for general practitioners looking to increase their skills in assessing, managing, and supporting infants and young children (0-5 years) with mental health difficulties, and supporting their families. Throughout this course, you will learn how to complete an infant and child mental health assessment and management plan using a specific GP framework.
Supporting children and families in general practice after a natural disaster or community trauma
This course is based on the understanding that natural disasters, and community trauma (such as the pandemic in some communities) can have a profound impact on children’s social and emotional wellbeing, and that GPs are well placed to work with children, parents and families to protect children from the impact of these events.
The course offers practical guides and tips for supporting children and families in the immediate aftermath, the short-term and long-term following a natural disaster or community trauma.
