Children of parents with dual diagnosis – An evidence-based research summary

The Children of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI) national initiative, Australia

This short, evidence-based research summary focuses on parents with ‘Dual Diagnosis’ and their children. Dual Diagnosis (DD) commonly refers to the co-existence of a psychiatric and a substance use disorder in an individual.

The paper examines the impact of parenting with DD on children, barriers to service access for parents who need help, and promising inteventions in the area.

‘Compared to other children in the community, children whose parents have a DD are at higher risk of abuse and neglect, being placed in care, and developing their own mental health, behavioural and substance use problems.
